Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera

I am so excited to be returning to the role of Pinkerton with the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera at the newly renovated Queensborough Performing Arts Center in on April 6th.

The sun rises on turn-of-the-century Nagasaki, where dashing American naval officer Pinkerton has chosen delicate Cio-Cio-San to be his bride. A naïve young geisha on the verge of womanhood, the clearly smitten and fiercely loyal "Butterfly," dismisses warnings of the lieutenant's ulterior motives. When betrayal inevitably strikes, and Butterfly must endure both shame and sorrow, she decides to take destiny into her own hands- leading to one of the most devastating and legendary final scenes in all of opera.

This performance is not one that should be missed! CLICK HERE FOR TICKET INFO!

Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Teatro Lirco D'Europa

I’m looking forward to returning to the wonderful music of Mozart with Teatro Lirco D'Europa in their production of Don Giovanni!

Act I

Leporello keeps watch while Don Giovanni seduces Donna Anna. Her father, the Commendatore, overhears some commotion and, believing his daughter to be in distress, challenges Giovanni to fight. In the scuffle that follows, Giovanni kills him. Anna flees the scene and shortly after returns with her fiancé Don Ottavio. She makes Ottavio swear to avenge her father’s death.

Giovanni and Leporello come across a distressed woman and her young maid. She turns out to be Donna Elvira, who has come from a nearby town determined to find Giovanni. He had married her there, but then abandoned her. Giovanni escapes from Elvira, leaving Leporello to recount to her Giovanni’s extraordinary catalogue of sexual conquests.

At Zerlina and Masetto’s wedding, Giovanni is about to make off with the bride, when Elvira intercepts him. Ottavio appears with Anna; he seeks his friend Giovanni’s help in searching for the Commendatore’s murderer. Elvira denounces Giovanni, which arouses Ottavio’s suspicions. As Giovanni leaves, Anna tells Ottavio that she has recognised him as the Commendatore’s murderer.

Giovanni orders Leporello to lay on a party.

Zerlina attempts to calm Masetto, whose jealousy has been aroused. Giovanni arrives and whips up the party, which is joined by Zerlina and Masetto. Anna, Ottavio and Elvira appear; they are wearing masks to disguise their identities. Leporello invites them to join in the dancing. Giovanni manoeuvres Zerlina away. When Zerlina cries out for help, Giovanni puts the blame on Leporello and threatens to kill him. Anna, Ottavio and Elvira unmask and denounce Giovanni for his crimes.

Act II

Giovanni forces Leporello to exchange identities with him, leading Elvira to believe that Leporello is in fact her lost husband. As they leave, Giovanni sings a serenade to Elvira’s maid.

Masetto is looking for Giovanni, who, still disguised as Leporello, beats him up. Zerlina attempts to soothe Masetto’s pain with the promise of sex.

In the darkness, Anna, Ottavio, Zerlina and Masetto discover Leporello, whom they believe to be Giovanni. Elvira pleads for mercy to be shown but the others are determined to kill him. They then discover that it is, in fact, Leporello and not Giovanni.

As Leporello escapes, Ottavio attempts to prove to Anna that he can take control of the situation. Elvira is caught between rage, pity and revenge on Giovanni.

Giovanni and Leporello find one another again, and Giovanni tells him about his adventures. A voice threatens to silence their laughter. Giovanni points out a statue of the Commendatore, and orders Leporello to invite the statue to dinner. The statue accepts.

Leporello serves Giovanni his supper. Elvira makes a final attempt to win back Giovanni. A knocking is heard and Leporello is terrified by the statue’s approach. The Commendatore enters. He gives Giovanni an ultimatum to repent or suffer the flames of Hell. Giovanni resists him.

Ottavio, Anna, Elvira, Zerlina and Masetto arrive to take their collective revenge on Giovanni. Leporello gives them his terrified version of what has just occurred, and joins them in proclaiming the death Don Giovanni.

I will be the Tenor Soloist for Larimer Chorale’s production of The Creation by Haydn. The Creation was inspired by Handel’s oratorios Messiah and Israel in Egypt, which Haydn had heard while traveling to England in the mid- 1790’s. As Haydn was writing The Creation, he thought of it as the summit of his entire life’s work, and certainly, that is how many generations of music-lovers have perceived it. Haydn’s The Creation is perhaps the greatest oratorio ever written.

Blind Injustice- Clarence Elkins

Blind Injustice is a timely and poignant opera telling the story of the East Cleveland Five and others who were wrongfully tried, convicted, imprisoned and then later released thanks to the work of the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP).  The work is based on the casework by OIP and the book Blind Injustice by University of Cincinnati law professor and OIP Director Mark Godsey. The story as told by a small cast, chorus and 12-piece orchestra, the opera brings to life the perseverance and forgiveness of these men and women.

Sounds of Cinema- Duke of Mantua

I have the honer of sining La donna è mobile from Verdi’s Rigoletto in the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra'‘s highly-anticipated Sounds of Cinema. When you reminisce on your favorite films, the soundtrack plays an important role because it engages audiences: it helps deliver information, it increases the production value, it evokes emotional responses, it emphasizes what's on the screen and is used to indicate mood. Fully narrated, this musical journey is the only way to celebrate the end of the GPO’s 111th concert season.

Susannah

I will be singing the role of Sam, Susannah’s brother in this two act opera by composer Carlisle Floyd. Written during the McCarthy era, Susannah is loosely based on the Apocryphal tale of “Susannah and the Elders.” The opera centers on a young and innocent woman of humble origins who is targeted as a sinner in a small mountain town of New Hope Valley in Tennessee. Floyd embraced folk music and Broadway influences—a vibrant and unexpected choice in the 1950s, when American serious composition was exclusively concerned with German expressionism.

Susannah was chosen to represent American music and culture at the World’s Fair at Brussels in 1958, with a production by Frank Corsaro. Today, Susannah is one of the most performed American operas, second to Porgy and Bess, and has come to symbolize the American voice in opera.

Carmina Burana- Tenor Soloist

If you could only take one piece of music on a long trip, you might pick Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Its 25 tracks offer something for everyone — and a piece of music for every mood imaginable.

The subject matter covered in Carmina stays pretty basic: love, lust, the pleasures of drinking and the heightened moods evoked by springtime. These primitive and persistently relevant themes are nicely camouflaged by the Latin and old German texts, so the listener can actually feign ignorance while listening to virtually X-rated lyrics.
